Ensuring Quality in Private Maternity Care

Local private maternity providers serve a large proportion of the population but the care women receive can vary. To help ensure women receive consistent, high-quality maternal care regardless of where they seek it, MSD for Mothers worked in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders in India and Uganda to develop a practical resource focused on quality management in private care settings.

The end result is the Private Maternity Care Quality Toolkit (PMC-QT)*, an asset designed to help measure and improve the quality care provided, whether by a doctor working at a large hospital or a health worker in a rural village.

The PMC-QT helps address private providers' needs and challenges in several ways:

  • The toolkit is applicable to a wide range of providers and settings to meet the needs of small midwife-run clinics as well as large, obstetrician-run hospitals.
  • The toolkit aligns with the World Health Organization standards, but is streamlined to focus on those most essential for private maternity providers to consider.
  • The quality standards and indicators span the maternity care continuum – including antenatal, intrapartum, and immediate postpartum care.
  • The toolkit is useful for quality improvement and assurance, making it an ideal tool for both self and external assessment from accreditors or regulators.
