MERCK FOR MOTHERS AND TIME
2017 UNGA SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLKIT
As the world continues to face the largest refugee crisis since World War II, there have been significant efforts to raise awareness about this plight. We hear stories of courage and trauma, and perspectives from a variety of sectors and stakeholders about what solutions can have the greatest impact. Yet, one scenario that many do not address is what occurs to women who are – or become – pregnant while displaced from home.
Since September 2016, TIME has been following three Syrian refugees as they prepared to give birth and raise children in foreign lands. All three learned of their pregnancies on the road and none expected to deliver in a refugee camp, far from the homes they fled in Syria. These women are among the more than 1,000 refugees who gave birth in Greek refugee camps in 2016 alone. As these babies, born of no nation, take their first steps, their parents continue their search for a home in a world that is increasingly hostile to refugees.
Through our partnership, TIME and Merck for Mothers aim to bring you into the lives of real women who are experiencing this unique circumstance.
During the 72nd United Nations General Assembly, we have an opportunity to raise awareness and inspire action.
